No pain, just stain!

Welcome to Holy City Henna. We are the only SC company dedicated to the art of henna temporary tattooing!

Since the dawn of time, the concept and practice of body decoration has been an integral part of life. Tattoos, scarification, piercing, hair coloring, cosmetics, perfume, clothing…is the human instinct to adorn the body? The body has been a canvas for expression and embellished in the never-ending quest for beauty since at least 100,000 years ago. Stone Age man braided seashells into their hair and wore bone necklaces. They also painted their bodies with symbols and marks to express social, cultural, or religious attitudes. Egyptian mummies in the Valley of the Nile were found with henna-tinted fingernails from around 1200 B.C. Every culture in the world has a distinctive style of body decoration and concept of beauty. The New Zealand Maoris are recognized by their distinctive facial tattooing (moko) just as different African nations are immediately recognizable by their large lip disks and stretched necks. Every culture throughout time has practiced some sort of body decoration or modification. What will yours be?

Safety Warning - No "Black Henna"!

Please do not allow someone to apply a tattoo on your skin made from "black henna." Henna is not black. Safe, natural henna powder is always green, and the stain that the paste leaves on the skin ranges in color from red, orange and brown. Products labeled "black henna" contains a synthetic black hair dye called para-phenylendiamine. This chemical is also used in photographic development. Individuals processing film wear safety gloves, apron and eye protection. When applied to the skin, PPD is dangerous and can cause blistering, open sores, scarring, and lifelong health problems.

Holy City Henna only uses henna paste made from all-natural ingredients and is guaranteed free from harmful chemicals.

Q. How much does a henna tattoo cost?

A. Our prices are listed under our services page. The cost of a henna tattoo depends on the size (amount of henna used) as well as the complexity of the design. We do not use stencils so each tattoo is a personalized work of art.

Q. Is it permanent?

A. No! A henna tattoo is not permanent. It only stains the top layer of skin for a short while, making it a temporary form of body art.

Q. Does it hurt?

A. No! A henna tattoo is drawn onto the skin and is a paste (the consistency of toothpaste). It does not break the skin; therefore it does not cause any pain.

Q. How long does a henna tattoo last on the skin?

A. Designs normally last from two to four weeks on the skin, depending on your body temperature, skin type, body chemistry, lifestyle, and where the henna is applied. Areas of skin that exfoliate more will fade the henna faster. The hands and feet stain the darkest and longest. Stains on the face will fade within a few days. Pool water, contact lens cleaning solution and body scrubs will fade the design in a shorter period of time.

Q. Can you dye your hair with it?

A. Yes. Henna is used to dye hair. However, if you plan to dye your hair with it, purchase a package that states it is a hair dye. The solution Holy City Henna uses is especially blended for use on skin.

Q. Can you dye your lips with it?

A. No. Lip skin does not absorb henna at all.

Q. Is there an age limit for getting a henna tattoo?

A. Anyone above the age of 6 can get a henna tattoo . We will not tattoo anyone under 6 since the paste can easily smear and will not come out of clothes. Henna is completely safe for the skin, however young children have the tendency to place objects into their mouths. Henna should not be ingested. Also, some babies have allergies to acidic substances, such as the lemon juice that is used in the paste.

Q. Can you apply it on a pregnant woman's belly?

A. Yes. It is completely safe. For the cautious, simply tell your doctor the ingredients of the paste for approval. Refer below to 'What is in the Paste?'

Q. How do you take the design off?

A. The stain fades gradually as your skin exfoliates. The time varies according to each individual. If you do want it to fade more quickly, you can rub it with an exfoliating agent, like a body scrub with sea salts. Also, the chemicals in pool water will fade the design faster.

Q. Has it ever not faded away?

A. No! Henna is a temporary skin dye. It always fades away.

Q. What's in the paste?

A. Henna powder, Eucalyptus oil, Lemon juice and Water.

Q. What color will the tattoo be?

A. The color of the stain you get using any natural henna paste, is reddish brown. Variations in color depend on your skin tone and skin type.

Q. Can you add anything to the henna to make it darker?

A. Not that we know of. However, it will stain darker and longer by leaving it on skin for as long as possible. Traditionally, women would leave the henna on their hands for a good 8 hours before removing the dried paste. In today's hectic world, 1 hour is great. Heat also helps the design stain well.

Q. What about black henna?

A. The color obtained with the natural henna plant is reddish brown. Black tattoos obtained using so-called "black henna" is the natural henna powder, to which black dyes, inks, or chemicals — all of them potentially dangerous to the skin — have been added. We often hear stories about people getting permanent scarring; people needing to be rushed to the hospital for cortisone injections; rashes, itching and other horror stories. We strongly recommend you stay away from so-called "black henna" mixtures. The only place we have seen Black Henna being used in SC is in Myrtle Beach along the Grand Strand. These vendors simply don't know the dangers of black henna, or don't care.

Q. How long does the paste take to dry?

A. The henna paste dries in 10 to 15 minutes. Large designs take longer than small ones. The henna paste dries on the skin, cracks, and then falls off. The stain is underneath.

Q. How long do I have to leave the paste on?

A. A minimum of 30 minutes to an hour. The longer you leave it on, the better.

Q. How do I take the paste off?

A. Simply pick it off with your nails or rub it off with your fingers or a towel. You can wash it afterwards to get off any remaining dried flecks of paste.
